Year 9 Rotations

At Year 9 all students will have the opportunity to try each of the following subjects, enabling them to make informed choices in Year 10.
  • ART
  • This course enables students to:
  • Develop a perceptual awareness by understanding their environment
  • Use their creative imagination by developing ideas and inventiveness
  • Develop their personal techniques focussing on skills, work habits and output
  • Develop their critical ability and an awareness of art forms

DRAMA
To develop basic Drama skills of characterisation and improvisation.

  • MUSIC
  • This course provides a learning environment accessible to every student, which will foster a student’s musical growth. All students will learn:
  • Performance
  • Composition
  • Aural skills
  • Music knowledge
  • Music literacy
    Students are encouraged to participate in the instrumental tuition programme.
  • APPLIED TECHNOLOGY
  • This is a practical subject where students learn:
  • How to design, make and evaluate projects
  • About tools and processes
  • How to use a wide range of materials (fibre, wood, metal, plastics)
    Students are given a design brief and expected to work independently and creatively.
  • COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY
  • This course is designed to enable students to confidently:
  • Use a personal computer
  • Establish appropriate file management procedures
  • Use an alpha-numeric keyboard using appropriate key/finger pathways
  • Produce documents using a word processor, spreadsheet and data base
    At Year 9 students learn to use a computer and the basic methods of displaying work using an integrated computer package.
  • GRAPHICS
  • This subject provides students with:
  • A range of skills including sketching, design, colour rendering
  • A developed knowledge of design processes and applications
  • HORTICULTURE
  • This course includes:
  • The study of plant growth and care
  • Purposes of horticulture
  • Extensive practical work in the College’s Horticulture unit
  • Laboratory and theory studies
  • LANGUAGE
  • This course is designed to teach students to:
  • Speak, read and write in a foreign language
  • Gain insights into foreign-speaking cultures and geographical, economic
    A variety of activities are used to encourage students to experiment with the language.
    The topics in this beginners’ course are selected for their relevance to the experience of teenagers.
  • TE REO MAORI
  • This course is designed as an introductory course in Terms 1 and 2 and involves learning:
  • The language, history, traditions and customs
  • Arts and crafts
    An in-depth study of the language in oral, aural and written forms of Te Reo Maori.
